An End to This Blog

I have officially begun to condense my life in blog world...as a full time college student and my most recent endevor of starting my own business, time just continues to become more and more scarce around here! Love Covers Tent City

So this summer I am nannying part time and interning for a non-profit called Faith that Works part time. Faith the Works has a vision of helping women to put their faith into action. Over the past several years, FTW has helped me by offering women's bible studies, funding much of my mission trip last summer, supporting Mercy Ministries, connecting me with new women in the community, encouraging me in my walk with the Lord, and helping to equip me to put my own faith into action when it comes to helping underprivileged women, both locally and abroad. 

One of my roles as an intern this summer is to make and sell soda tab bracelets. Since Faith that Works has a heart to help women in need, one of the ways I have been able to my faith into action is to go down to Tent City once a week and teach women living there how to make these bracelets. Tent City is a homeless camp in downtown St. Louis where men and women live in a community and look out for one another. There are four different camps along this little strip by the river. Specifically, we are working in one of the camps right now, because there have been some uprisings and violence in the others.

This past week, I went down with Terri (the founder of FTW) and another woman involved in our bible study. With it only being my second time to Tent City, I knew I was not yet ready to venture down there alone. As the wheels of our SUV crush over the rocky train tracks, I begin to prepare myself for what is coming. Lord, give me your eyes to see. As I gaze through the window to my right, unable to avoid the impoverished of America, I can’t help but wonder how these people make it—how they get to this point of homeless? I mean, as humans, we all come from somewhere…parents, brothers, sisters, aunts uncles, grandparents, friends, neighbors, coworkers. Each and every one of them has a story to tell—a life that matters. I think that is what really gets me during my time in Tent City—these are PEOPLE with more hurts and heartaches then I could ever imagine…men and women with stories to tell.

As our SUV approaches the camp we are going to, the rubbish and brokenness beside the little gravel road never fail to stir something deep within my heart. Actually, the physical appearance of the camps in Tent City—trash, broken equipment, run down tents, stained mattresses, junk scattered through the weed-infested grass, tattered clothing and blankets abound—very much mirror the way society views the hearts that reside there as well. To so many Americans, these people are nothing more then broken, run down, stained, weed-infested, tattered “trash.” It is almost as if their living situation, living without a home, becomes their identity in the eyes of others. The trashy environment that surrounds them suddenly becomes the image to define their hearts and minds. Oh how wrong this generalization is.

I often wonder if the community that these men and women live in actually makes homelessness a better choice then living in a home but separated from this kind of community. As we pull up and park the big black vehicle in front of the cluster of tents and shacks before us, before we can even get a foot out the door, men and women are running towards us. This sight never gets old to me. Huge smiles and warm embraces are shared. There is no stench in this kind of love, none whatsoever. This is beautiful. They are beautiful. They are treasures.

Matthew 13: 44 says, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” What a picture of what Jesus has done for these men and women—they are the treasure hidden in the field. The Lord joyfully gave it all, His one and only beloved Son, so that He could buy freedom for these men and women—He gave it all to purchase these souls in this trashed, run-down, weed-infested field. Oh what a faithful God we get to love. In fact, it is through THIS love…through knowing this Jesus that I get the privagledge of loving on these women in Tent City. This is the only kind of love I have ever known which wiped out the stench, the pain, the brokenness, the sin, the hurts, the stains, the weeds, the regrets…this love covers over a multitude of sins.

He Fights For Us

Well, the past few weeks have been crazy, busy, and more then anything...challenging. Two weeks ago I had my first "official" bracelet making night here in Fayetteville where my roomates so graciously agreed to opening up our apartment for a bunch of girls to come over and make the soda tab bracelets which are being sold to raise money for our girls home in Addis Ababa.

The clock struck 7pm just as I pulled out the final batch of gooey buter cake cookies. I placed the warm cookies on a plate beside the array or veggies, muffins, cupcakes, and other goodies scattered throughout the kitchen. Finally, I could breathe. All of the preprations were complete. After a day full of cleaning, organzing, planing, preparing, and decorating the apartment had never sparkled quite like this.

In the quietness and [pride] of a job well done, I felt it once again. That was not the first time that day I had felt a little butterfly make its way across my stomach. Okay what is the deal here? I kept offering up reasons for the unmistakable nerves settling in. Looking back now, I suppose He was simply preparing for what was to come, but in the moments prior, the flutters left me pondering.

7:05pm. Well, fashionably late is in right? I pull out the Word as I race to fill my mind with reminders of why I am doing this in the first place. There is NO room for lies in these thoughts I could hear myself replay over and over. 7:10pm. Finally, I hear footsteps outside with the windws wide open on this perfect spring evening. The knob turns as one of my roomates glides in. My usual excitement to see her walk through the door was replaced with more flutters. Lots more flutters. What if no one shows up? I began to panic.

We made little chit chat, but the tension in the room could be felt miles away. More footsteps. 7:20pm. Yes they are just outstide our door. Praise the Lord at least someone will help is eat all this food! The knob twists once again as another one of my roomates comes in. Despite the relief that she brought to an otherwise tense siuation, I could not help but hold back the tears for a bit longer. More flutters. More lies. At this point it hits me:  no one is coming.

Sure enough, no one came. Turns out I picked the wrong night; 80% of the friends I invited were at another event scheduled the same night, something I didn't realize until it was too late to change this event. The others had random reasons for not coming when we talked about it later...a few went out of town, one had a friend in town, another completely forgot. Despite the reailty of this, an overwhleming weight of failure and dissapointment lingered in my fragile heart. My roomates tried to save the day by sitting down and allowing me to teach them how to make these bracelets. That didn't last too long before tensions rose and the insecurity and disapointment I was experiencing came tumbling out, not in the most graceful way of course. Words were uttered between us and feelings were hurt.

After it all came tumbling down, I found myself curled up in a ball on my bed, head burried as the tears began to stream down my cheeks. It didn't take long for that deep, uncontrolable, utterly miserable weeping to take over as the tears dreanched the pillow. Shortly two of my roomates came in and sat on each side of me. Somone's hand rubbed my back while the other spoke softly. In that moment it was like one of thoseout of body experiences...where it's like you decide if you close your eyes and think hard enough, then this will all be one crazy dream that never really happened. Unfortunately, I never woke up. Welcome to reality.

I was hurting and the lies were rolling through on replay like a broken record. See, I told you no one would come. You really don't have any friends...what have I been telling you all along? You're not cut out for this...don't you see, you will never be good enough. And they're only here because they have to be...I mean you heard her earlier, she never even wanted to even come in the first place. Well, you really messed things up now, child!

After Rachel and Kelley helped pull me out of my pity party, they helped me to see past the lies that seeed to overtake rather quickly. The enemy was bound and determined to destroy the work the Lord had called us to complete that night...and even when it turned out nothing like I expected and brought so much unexpected and hurt, that night I saw my Jesus.

I saw the way HE has tirelessly pursued me. I tasted a just a bit of His hurt when I turn from Him. I saw a glimmer of light...a Truth worth clinging to. So I did. Even though my mind was handing out free lies all night long, I had to make a deision in that moment of how I was going to respond. Was the Jesus who I claimed would transform the lives of these girls who have spent years of thier lives enslaved to the sexual desires of men enough for me in this moment of hurt and disappointment?

My precious roomie called up a few boys (one of whom wasn't even a beleiver) and for the next few hours we made bracelets. Yes, even the boys. As the night wore on, in the most unexpected, out of my control, not in my plans, completely soverign will of God I saw His heart, a heart broken for His daughters in Ethiopia and around the world. He didn't need my compulsive planning, my endless systems, my spectacular cooking or even my few friends. He didn't need me to understand all the happenings of the night. All He asked was that I seek His face...that I submit to His ways...that I am faithful in the small things. In that moment, head burried in the pillow, lies flooding my mind, feelings outweighing the Truth He never asked me to get up and fight. He didn't even ask me to fix the mess I felt like I made or to find a way to get all these bracelets made.

All He required was this: "I will fight for you; you need only to be still." Exodus 14:14

In the stillness, Jesus speaks.

And He did fight for me...for them really. With the help of these random boys we made just over 60 braelets that night. For a long time I did wonder "Why am I doing this? What's the point? I'm not getting anywhere in this campaign. How will one college girl ever make any significant impact in the lives of these girls? Where is $10,000 going to come from?" Then I remember...in the stillness Jesus speaks. And He doesn't need me to do any of it...if He wanted these girls out tomorrow, He obviously has the ability to provide the money tonight. In the same sense, if He wanted those bracelets made by a bunch of the girls I invited, they would have showed up. But He had other plans. As much as the night was suppossed to be about the girls, I think He actually used it minister to my heart. To give me a gentle nudge, a gracious reminder of the fact that He doesn't need me to be doing any of this...this isn't about me...or them really. This is about HIM, the only One who has the ability to trasform them. The one to whom all the honor, praise and glory belongs.
"Courtney, I will fight for you! I will fight for them! You just chill out and let me do it...after all, my ways are higher then yours, yeah?"

So as I sat there pondering what exactly He was trying to tell me when no one showed up...perhaps that I wasn't supposed to be doing this campaign...in the stillness, I knew He was fighting for us--for me and and for them. And sure enough, He did!

Seems as if this constant opposition and being faithful in the small things really has become an overarching theme down here in the south the past couple weeks. Things have been quiet and yet quite heavy every time that I continue to forget who is doing the fighting...and who already won the victory!

Ironically, this hangs in my room.

The Secret of Being Content

As I sit here adding to my ever-growig "To-Do" List once again, I sigh deeply in anticipation of the week to come, as I remember that this is a week of rest for me. Just rest, Courtney! The day will come (sadly, quite soon actually) when I am thrown back into the chaos of day-to-day life as a college student, working women, and activist. Though part of me longs for the daily drudge of life back at school, I desperately needed this week of relaxation and precious time with friends and family back home. To learn to just be content with where I'm at is such a challenge for me. I am always in dread or anticipation of the next day, the next season, the next trip, the next break, the next test. Today, the Lord assurred me I could just be content with today. What a beautiful place to be.

As I close out the week in the Lou, I am excited for yet another packed-full day of sweet time with friends and even a couple meetings mixed in there. So, for just one more day I will withstand the overwhleming urge to knock out some of that heaping pile of school work and work work in pursuit of the much-needed break I have been blessed to experience this week!

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have take hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.

…many live as enemies of the cross. Their destiny is destruction, their God is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame…BUT HE TRANSFORMS!

I am not an enemy of the Cross, so…

I will not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, I will present my requests to God and the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

I will think on whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—I will think about such things.

And I will learn to know what it is to be in need and to know what it is to have plenty. I will learn the secret of being content in every and any situation.

Preparing the Tabs

As some of you may know, I am a part of a campaign to raise $100,000 to build a safe home for girls waiting to be rescued out of the Red Light Districts in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This campaign functions on multiple levels, but one very practical fundraiser I am promoting as a student on a college campus in particular, is selling these soda tab bracelets.

I have been busy recruiting volenteers to help get some of the bracelets made since there seems to be an increasing demand which my own hands cannot keep up with! The bracelets are such a great product to market, since they cost pennies to make but then are sold for $10 each, all of that money going to fund this safe home.

While I'm home on Sping Break this week, I decided I better try to get some good headway in producing these bracelets, so this morning I began the process of preparing the soda tabs for bracelet making.









I washed all of the tabs in bleach/water mixture.


 











Then rinsed them off and layed them out to dry.


 












This was quite the process, especailly considering the need to clean thousands of these tabs at once!

For the One

Do you know misery? Do you know darkness? Do you know pain? Do you know hopelessness? Do you know worthlessness? Do you know torment? Do you know that feeling, the one that makes you wish you could just disappear?

Do you know the desperation, the burning and gnawing wretchedness that leads one to truly believe that the brightest alternative to this hell on earth, the easiest way to disappear, to escape from it all, is to bury oneself alive…literally?

A while back, I heard a story that comes to mind right now. Tonight I have been wrestling mercilessly in my head with this desire to have mercy for the ONE verses this calling to fight for justice for the HUNDREDS. Either way, there are cons. Sure, I could help the one, but in doing so would I harm the hundreds? How much help could I really offer to the one, that is after she was taken to a safe place…then what? I could help the hundreds over months and years, but what about the one that is being raped and beaten as I type this?

Mercy or Justice? The proper proportionate mixture of the two. It is a war that wages in my head continually these days. Whose side I am on, I honestly could not tell you.

But tonight as I was spending some time crying out on behalf of the ONE, the Lord gently confirmed my pleas by reminding me of a story I heard a bit ago. I changed it up a little bit and added my own take on it, but the concreteness of it is factual. It is utterly gut-wrenching and certainly inspires a sense of mercy for even the most heartless of persons.

A man was visiting a brothel. He was actually an undercover cop, but no one knew it. He was walking through the building, getting the lay of the land within this prominent Red Light District. As his eyes darted from room to room, corner to corner, he took up notes in his head as to the placement of everything. He knew in a few months he would be back here; the next time, he wouldn’t be undercover.

A few weeks prior, the authorities had several reports of possible cases of trafficking. It led to the discovery of a large trafficking ring, actually over 30 brothels intertwined, in one way or another. This was one of them. He was here on a mission; one which he could not act on until it could all come down at once. He was doing justice. It took time. But the payoff, well, the payoff would result in the HUNDREDS being set free.

As he finished up touring the inside, he noticed a door leading out back. He had come in broad daylight, so many of the young girls, free from the demand of their clientele, were playing outside on this sunny day. The door banged shut behind him as he took several steps out onto the back patio. His eyes skimmed the surroundings, as he immediately envisioned the troops surrounding the tall wooden fence, which currently served to lock these girls into this hellish nightmare. His plan of action was just about complete.

As he turned to head back into the darkness of the brothel, something caught his eye. He glanced back, as if his eyes were playing tricks on him. After all, there is no way he just saw what he thought he just saw. Slowly, he rotated his body back in the direction of the east end of the yard. Much of the terrain where the little girls were playing was sheeted in lifeless brown grass. Then there were certain parts of the ground encompassing the fence that were simply covered in dirt. Sitting deep in the shadow of the fence, he wonders how he even noticed her. Her skin was a light hazelnut, her tattered brown curls fell well past her shoulders. She was hunched over a bit, sitting in the dirt.

He watched her for a few long moments, as his eyes seemed to struggle to transmit to the proper signals to his brain to process what he was actually seeing. After all, this wasn’t the kind of thing they prepared you for in the force. This wasn’t the kind of thing they prepared you for in parenthood. This was just not something you would ever think you might need to be prepared for. In fact, nothing could prepare you for something of this gravity.

Hunched over, he watched as she leaned forward took up a handful of dirt into her palm. He felt his legs beging to wobble a bit, as he seemed to be losing his balance. He could not take his eyes off of her, though everything in him wanted to. He wished to run…to close his eyes and run away, like this wasn’t happening right before him. And yet, something kept his feet plastered to the ground beneath him. His eyes, wider then they ever have been, continued to watch her with great intent.

She sat back a bit, her bottom gently landing in the little pile of dirt that she rested on. He watched as she took the handful of dirt she had just picked up from the ground and proceeded to dump it right onto the top of her head. He watched her pale face expressionless face as she continued reaching forward and sweeping up large handfuls of dirt into her palms, and then piled it atop her curly locks of hair. It began to sweep down over her eyes, some piling up atop her sharp shoulder blades. Her white tank top was completely dusted in the russet dirt, its red undertones disguising her lighter complexion.

After an hour or so, of just being glued to that spot, one of the girls who had been playing with a ball walked over to the man. She followed his eyes which were still glued to the little girl covering herself in dirt. She tugged on the bottom of his shirt, breaking his trance and getting his attention. He looked down at her, her big brown eyes gazing up at him. Broken from his state of denial, he hesitated before proceeding to ask the childlike teenage girl what exactly that young girl was doing over there by fence.

Having already seen the child of whom he was speaking, the girl refused to unlock her eyes from his. She solemnly replied, looking straight into his eyes. She was taken from her maw when she was five years old. She new here. Last night, madam asked me to take her upstairs and get her ready for her debut. Her whole body, it was shakin as I applied the pink blush and dull lipstick. I tried to tell her she had to stop those tremors or they were gunna beat on her, but she didn’t seem to hear what I told her.
I took hold a her hand and escorted her to the line up. Several of the customers fought to have her. She was new, pure. Her kind was in high demand round here. Madam knew it too. It doesn’t happen this way much, but madam let them all have at her at once. Ten of them maybe. I sat outside the whole time. We could all hear her cries as they slapped her around her, the screams as they each got their go at her. Madam had me drug her up afterwards. She was pretty bloody, pretty darn messed up. I tried to talk to her, to tell her it would be okay. She just kept on staring away, gone to another place it seemed.

I guess she already gone and lost all her hope because now she over there trying to bury herself in that dirt pile. She done can’t handle the pain no more. She tryin to go on disappearing. I guess we all try to. She just out here makin it happen in the physical.

He stood, perfectly still, the tears pouring down his cheeks, as he realized that this one, this precious little girl, did not have enough time for him to do justice. He could not wait a month, a year, for the go ahead to save the hundreds. This ONE would not make it til then. The ONE needed him today, right now. He was overwhelmed by mercy. As he began striding towards her dirt pile in the corner of the yard, he decided that in this moment, right now, SHE mattered more then the hundreds.
Again I ask, do you know the desperation, the burning and gnawing wretchedness that leads one to truly believe that the brightest alternative to this hell on earth, the easiest way to disappear, to escape from it all, is to bury oneself alive…literally?

This precious little girl, made in the image God, birthed into this world with a divine purpose, plan, hope and future, set apart, beautiful in His eyes, is hurting so much that she sits in a pile of dirt, attempting to bury herself in it. This is when mercy for the ONE matters. Her life matters.
